Drinking Water and Sanitation Equity Gaps

A country’s equity gap represents the difference between the groups with the least and highest access to drinking water or sanitation. A country with a large overall drinking water/sanitation equity gap (high percentage) means there is a large difference between ethnic groups accessing water and sanitation services. A country with a low overall drinking water or sanitation equity gap (low percentage) means there is not much difference between ethnic groups accessing water or sanitation services. Equity gap data comes from the 2021 Global Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) Report. The MPI measures poverty in 109 countries across three dimensions — health, education, and living standards — using 10 indicators of deprivation.
